Beyond the Brown Paper Bag Test: De-constructing Black and Brown

The objective of this program is to motivate and influence an international dialogue that will examine the global need to develop thinking, terminology, programs and actions that will unite African descendants in a collaborative manner.

The 5th Annual Re-Defining African American Conference, will deconstruct the meaning of Black and Brown, by examining the complexities within each color identification and the underlying culture and history surrounding both.

Panelists:
Dr. Yaba Blay: Ghanaian-born-American whose research focuses on the body politics of women of African descent, with particular specialization in global skin color politics. Her most recent research project investigates skin bleaching among Ghanaians.

Rosa Clemente: Afro-Boricua Hip Hop Activist, journalist, and 2008 Green Party Vice Presidential candidate. She is currently teaching at Lehman College.

Rogelio Pineda: Caribbean researcher and writer who has focused on the African Diasporic experience using a comparative approach regarding the issues of lost African identities, colonial/slave identities and post-colonial identities, linguistic, economic and historical underpinnings.

I have attend a formal dinner and this was the best fitting/looking dress. However, to keep within budget can I use a small semi-sequined black handbag I already own and would I wear black shoes to match the bag or brown to match the "Tequila dress"?

old and new clothes, is there a charity company in London that would come and collect these? or do I have to take them to a charity shop?

Taking 4 big bags could be a pain in the ass. I don’t live in London so I don’t know if there are any that would pick them up. Look at furnature charity shops…here in Leeds they pick up the furnature from your house, but don’t take it to the shop. They take it to a warehouse to be sorted for the most appropriate shop first, and some of those shops sell cloths, so if they are in your area they might call in and collect them for you.

Otherwise I would suggest getting an old carrier bag or back pack and taking just a few items with you every time you go out if you are heading towards a busy area, and just call in. It will take only seconds each time to call into a shop, and although you won’t be getting rid of them all at once, they will be going down slowly.

Its about time people started thinking about others again…good for you :~)

Maybe i should throw it out?

I would just put it under the tap water and use a little soap and water to wash it off. After it drys put a little pledge spray for dusting and buff it back to normal.
